Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:30 am, the temperature is 57.7 degrees.
.29 inches of rain fell in Townsend yesterday morning. It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 70’s. We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms are possible tonight. Rain may be heavy at times. The low temperature tonight will be in the upper 50’s. Showers are likely tomorrow. It may be windy.
Little River is flowing at 242 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.07 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 393 cfs. The water temperature is 53.4 degrees.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near or below normal today. Most streams rose somewhat yesterday then receded. Water temperatures are good in the lower elevations.
This time of the year, it is a good idea to have a thermometer in your pack or vest. You should fish where the water temperature is at least 50 degrees. In the higher elevations, the water will be cooler. Fishing will be better in the lower elevations.
Nymphs, wet flies and possibly dry flies will work for you today. Aquatic insects are active. Early season mayflies are dark. They may be Quill Gordons, Blue Quills or Blue Wing Olives. A Parachute Adams mimics many of these mayflies. Have a selection in your box, in several sizes.
Lowland river fishing is good where trout are stocked. Nymphs, egg patterns and streamers are all good fly choices for stocked trout. They are packed in some rivers and they are hungry. Smallmouth bass fishing is probably slow to fair.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers plan to generate at most dams in the region today. I do not check every schedule. Click on the links below to see if you have tailwater fishing options. Look at South Holston, Douglas and Chatuge dams.
The weather could put a damper on good fishing over the next few days. We may see heavy rain, especially tonight and tomorrow. It could be windy at times. Cold temperatures at night are expected Friday through Sunday which will lower the water temperatures.
It is early Spring. Temperature swings are normal. Heavy rain is always a possibility. It can snow in March. The worst snow storm I can remember, occurred in early March. In the past, we have had extremely cold temperatures, even in early April, though that is rare.
The long term weather forecast indicates a warming trend next week beginning Monday and lasting through the end of March. That is good news. I hope it is true.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
