Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature is 40.3 degrees.
Warm air has moved into the Smokies. It will be sunny with a high around 70 degrees today, dropping to the upper 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high near 70 and a low in the low 50’s.
We have a chance for rain Wednesday with a high of 70 degrees and a low in the 50’s. It will continue to be warm through next weekend.
Little River is flowing at 617 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 380 cfs. The water temperature is 48.7 degrees this morning.
Water temperatures will rise this week. Fishing will improve every day. The streams will continue to recede through Wednesday though they are higher than normal today. Stream flows are higher than some anglers prefer but you will be able to find fishable water.
Nymphs, wet flies and possibly dry flies will work for you. Aquatic insects will be active. Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer and you may want to wait until later today to go after the water warms.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Wading will be limited in some rivers. Fish the areas that are stocked with trout using nymphs, egg patterns and streamers. Fishing will improve in these rivers as the water warms this week.
TVA and the Corps plan to generate today at most dams in the region. Check the schedule at your favorite tailwater. You may see something I did not. I do not check every dam in the mornings before writing this report.
We are very busy at the shop, much busier than last year. Of course, the store was closed to customers last year for a few weeks. We offered curbside pickup only at the time. Things are different now.
We know fly fishing Spring has begun, though it slowed for a few days due to high water and cool temperatures. Now we will enjoy good fishing again this week.
Check the water temperature where you are fishing. If the water temps are in the low to middle 50’s, fishing will be good. I have always thought the ideal water temperature for trout is 58 degrees or warmer.
When the lowland rivers reach the high 50’s or warmer, smallmouth bass fishing will be good.
Looking at the long term weather forecast, I only see one fairly cold night and one cool day through April 5th.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
