Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 56.3 degrees.
It will be warm today with a high temperature in the low 70’s. Widespread heavy rainfall is predicted for today and tonight with severe thunderstorms possible. We are under a flash flood watch. Strong winds are expected this afternoon and tonight. We are under a wind advisory tonight.
It will be mostly sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s. Saturday will be warm with a chance for showers and thunderstorms. The chance for rain continues through Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 387 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.42 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 351 cfs. The water temperature is 54.9 degrees this morning and reached 57 degrees yesterday.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. The forecast does not look good. I don’t like the high wind part of it. That alone would keep me out of the Smokies later today. Additionally, the chance for flash flooding is not appealing either. If you are fishing in the mountains, be aware that streams may rise quickly.
This storm front is coming at a time when fishing conditions are excellent in the mountains. Trout are taking nymphs, wet flies and dry flies. Aquatic insect activity is very high. I hate writing this report today. I was hoping for a better outcome. Maybe it won’t be as bad as they say.
Lowland rivers are flowing at normal. The water has warmed. Fishing is good, especially where trout are stocked. Nymphs, egg patterns and streamers will catch trout. Smallmouth bass fishing has improved. I don’t know how much it has improved. If we get the heavy rain, some lowland rivers may be stained and possibly flowing very high later today and tomorrow.
I checked the generation schedules at several dams. There are breaks in the schedules at some, including Douglas, South Holston and Chatuge dams. Click on the links below to see what options are available to you on your favorite tailwater. You will have more options if you are boating. I would be hesitant to be boating today with the predicted high winds and heavy rain.
Wow, Spring is definitely here. Redbuds are blooming at our house. Paula is killing boring bees with a tennis racket. I saw wasps yesterday.
Here is something you don’t see often. I never have. Someone shot video of a bear killing a wild hog in Cades Cove. Evidently, it is not that rare. You can watch the video, watch and listen to the Smokies wildlife biologist talk about the incident and read the whole story on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE. Black bears do not just eat nuts and berries.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
