Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 36.0 degrees.
Strong storms, high winds and heavy rain were predicted yesterday. It happened, but not in Townsend. We did get .99 inches of rain. The storms barely missed us.
It will be sunny today with a high in the low 60’s falling to around 40 degrees tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the middle 50’s. Rain returns tomorrow night, lasting through Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 1,790 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 4.32 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 314 cfs. the water temperature is 49.6 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing high at 4,860 cfs or 5.58 feet, compared to median flow of 651 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 2,170 cfs, 3.66 feet, which compares to median flow of 647 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 1,460 cfs, 4.18 feet, compared to median flow of 356 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 582 cfs, 3.88 feet, compared to median flow of 141 cfs.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing high. The ground is saturated. The rivers and streams are slowly receding. I would not plan to fish in the Smokies today.
Lowland rivers are flowing high, too high to safely wade and fish. Some if not all tributaries flowing into these rivers are stained. The spring creek flowing behind our house was muddy late yesterday. It flows into Little River in Townsend at the old “Back Porch” restaurant building.
I saw breaks in the generation schedules at a couple of dams today, and there may be more. There is the possibility some tailwaters or areas in tailwaters will be stained below the confluence of creeks entering the rivers.
Overall, this is not a good fishing day but there may be some tailwater fishing options. Check the TVA website to see what opportunities you have.
We are busy at the shop. The fly tying department has been especially busy. Yesterday, we sold our last Renzetti Traveler C2003 vise. I normally keep 4 of this model in stock. Three have been ordered for a couple of weeks. We have five Renzetti Vises backordered.
I talked to Lily Renzetti this week. They are behind in production. She thinks we will have more Traveler vises shipped to us in a week or two. I don’t remember this ever happening. Believe me, she hates this worse than I do.
Renzetti is a small company that has been overwhelmed with business during the past year or more, like many others. Lily bought a new milling machine and they are working longer hours to catch up.
Something else I hate is this high water.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
