Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 41.5 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today, with a high in the middle 70’s, falling to the low 40’s tonight. We have a chance for showers tomorrow morning. It will be cloudy and cooler with a high in the low 50’s, dropping to around the freezing point overnight. Areas of frost are possible Thursday morning. It will be clear with a high around 60 degrees later.
Little River is flowing at 159 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 266 cfs. The water temperature is 52.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing below normal. Water temperatures will be good today in the lower elevations. Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies may produce as well, especially later today.
Water temperatures will fall tomorrow night into Thursday morning. Fishing may slow temporarily.
Lowland rivers are flowing below normal. Fishing for trout is good. Smallmouth bass fishing is probably fair. Nymphs and streamers will work for both.
There are breaks in the generation at several dams today, creating fly fishing opportunities on some of the tailwaters. Check the schedules at Appalachia, Cherokee, Norris and South Holston Dams to see if you can work with them. There may be other opportunities that I did not see. If you are boating you will have more options.
If you plan to fish on a lake, go early or late when the sun is off the water. Look for warmer water if you are fishing for bass. I would fish the rocky banks with streamers. It may be a little breezy at times today.
We need rain and it looks like Saturday is the day. One prediction I saw calls for up to three quarters of an inch during the day and through the night.
I went to the shop early yesterday, like I do every day. I got some work done and drove home. Paula and I dug out our kayaks and got our gear together for some fishing trips this year.
It seems, when we travel, we take everything we own. Our kayaks are towed on a Malone trailer. We have a car topper for storage on top of the SUV. And, we like to take our bicycles on a hitch mounted rack. So, how do we do that?
We have a double hitch receiver. It turns one hitch receiver into two. The kayak trailer hooks to the lower receiver and the bicycle rack to the upper receiver. CLICK HERE to visit the Malone website and you will see what I am talking about. You could also use the upper receiver for a hitch mounted storage box.
There is no doubt, more people are traveling this year, compared to last. We didn’t go anywhere last year. 2021 is going to be different.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
