Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 32.4 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low to middle 60’s, dropping to the middle 40’s tonight. It will rain tomorrow with locally heavy rainfall possible. It will be breezy. The high temperature will be in the middle 60’s with a low in the upper 40’s. Sunday will be partly sunny and warmer with a high in the upper 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 136 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 259 cfs. The water temperature is 47.3 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are cold this morning but we will see them warm later today. I would go fishing later when the water is warmer and fish in the lower elevations. Nymphs will work. Dry flies may too, later in the day. You may want to switch to a dry and nymph dropper rig at some point.
Lowland river fishing will improve today and over the weekend if we don’t get too much rain. Trout fishing where they are stocked will be good later today. Nymphs and streamers are good fly choices. Smallmouth bass fishing will improve as the waters warm over the next few days.
Tailwater anglers should check the generation schedules at South Holston, Norris and Cherokee dams. You may have some opportunities there and possibly below other dams today.
I don’t think shallow water lake fishing will be good today. Tomorrow will not be a good lake fishing day, due to the possibility of windy conditions and rain. Lake fishing will improve next week.
The big question is tomorrow. How much rain will we get? Nobody is saying. The chance for rain is 100%.
Severe thunderstorms are predicted in the south. Rainfall amounts to our south could exceed 1 to 2 inches or more. We do not appear to be in that path according to the predictions right now.
Looking further into the future, next week, through May 7th will be very warm, with highs in the 70’s and 80’s beginning Monday.
I am going to be off for three weeks. Paula and I will be fishing almost every day. Daniel will be writing the fishing report during that time. I have been looking forward to this.
Of course, I will be happy to be back at work. Little River Outfitters is my favorite hobby. Fly fishing is my other favorite hobby.
Our team at the shop is the best ever. There are also more of us working there than ever before. I will miss all the guys and you, our customers.
I hope you enjoy great fishing over the next few weeks. You should.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
