Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 63.9 degrees.
It is cooler, finally. It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature of around 82 degrees, falling to the low 60’s again tonight. Tomorrow through Friday will remain cooler before warming again this weekend. The chance for showers and thunderstorms will increase tomorrow, with a higher chance on Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 134 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 120 cfs. The water temperature is 68.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing slightly below normal, with the exception of Tellico River which is flowing higher. Water temperatures are falling, though the water will still be warm in the lowest elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Go early when the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Try a terrestrial dry fly with a Green Weenie or bead head nymph dropper. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. Stay hidden and get a good drift. You will catch more trout.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are at close to normal gauge heights. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish will be found in the deeper pools and runs. I would go early or late when the sun is off the water unless the river you intend to fish has plenty of tree cover. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crawfish patterns are all good choices.
There are wade fishing and boating options on several of the area tailwaters today. At some dams, there will be generation early and in one case, all day. At others I looked at this morning, generation will be curtailed except for pulsing until later in the day. Visit the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing opportunities are today.
It will be mostly sunny today so I would plan to fish the lakes early or late. Hit the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. You may see baitfish on the surface being fed on by game fish when the sun is very low. This is more likely on cloudy days. It is a lot of fun to try to slip into those schools of baitfish to get into the action. Plan on being extremely quiet, cast far, sit instead of standing so you won’t be easily seen, and use streamers that mimic threadfish shad.
Keep in mind, that larger bass, trout and other gamefish may actually be feeding deeper below the surface, and not on top. I always have tungsten beads normally used to tie nymphs in our boat, when I want my streamers to sink deeper. Slide the bead on your leader then tie on your streamer. Pinching on split shot will work but it does weaken your tippet at that point. I don’t know how many fish I have broken off, right below the split shot.
There is also the possibility that really huge fish are feeding on the smaller game fish that are attracted to the shad. Keep that in mind too.
It is peaceful in Townsend right now. There are less visitors, which is normal in August. The summer vacations are about over for younger families. The kids are going back to school.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
