Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun is shining bright today. We are going to get a taste of summer over the next several days as the temps warm into the 80's. If you prefer cold, don't despair, it will be 60 and wet again on Friday.
Recent rains have brought water levels in the Smokies back up to a normal level. This morning the Little River is flowing at 2.08 feet or 222 c.f.s. The daily normal is 256 c.f.s. Water clarity should be clear.
Water temperatures dropped a few degrees overnight. This morning the temperature on Little River is 49.6F. Everything will warm up today and keep warming over the next several days.
Catch rates should improve over the next days. A local angler sent me a message that he saw a bunch of sulphurs or other light colored mayflies yesterday. He didn't see any trout rising to them and caught all his fish on nymphs. It won't be long now and the trout will really be feeding on the surface.
The moon is full and bright. I think that messes the fishing up some as the trout are likely feeding at night. They will be hungry again mid day.
Nymph patterns have been the most productive lately. Heavy Euro style flies sunk deep are good. Also, the old classics, Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Hares Ear etc are excellent. Fishing a dry/dropper is a good way to hedge your bet.
The hatches are transitioning into a lighter color pallet. Hendricksons, Light Cahill, March Brown and Sulphurs are more prevalent. Elk Hair Caddis in Olive, Tan or Yellow are good high floating choices. It won't be long and the Yellow Sallies will be out.
We have had a horrible time getting hold of the Neversink Caddis pattern. The company that we have bought them from for years was not good at shipping last year so we moved onto other fly makers. Another one has the original version of the Neversink but they haven't been shipping them either. We do have a wide variety of foam bodied Yellow Sally patterns in the bins. Most will work even better than the Neversink. Next time you are shopping the fly bin we can point them out.
