Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 67.5 degrees.
It will be hot and humid today with a high temperature around 90 degrees and a chance for scattered thunderstorms. It will be slightly cooler tomorrow with more scattered thunderstorms possible. Saturday and Sunday will bring us somewhat cooler temperatures with a higher chance for thunderstorms.
Small but slow moving storms moved along the spine of the Smokies yesterday. Rainfall amounts reported were, .37” Townsend, .36” Cades Cove, .19” Gatlinburg, .47” Sevierville, 0” at Newfound Gap and .09” at Tellico Plains.
Little River is flowing at 149 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.80 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 140 cfs. The water temperature is 71.1 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site in Townsend.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are very warm in the low elevations. Fish the higher elevation streams where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the middle 60’s or cooler. Dry flies and nymphs are working. A dry fly with a nymph dropper is a good choice. Flies that mimic terrestrials are recommended. Fish the broken water and stay hidden from the trout.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are at normal levels, which are low in August. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught on poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many dams in the area with a few exceptions. Power demand is high due to the heat. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
It is going to be hot on the lakes today. Winds will be calm. It should be overcast at times. My advice is to go early and take plenty of water to drink. Cast poppers or foam floating flies to the banks. If that is not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. If it is in fact cloudy, watch for game fish attacking schools of shad on the surface.
It is going to be cooler next week, closer to normal, with a good chance for scattered thunderstorms most days. We may see a high in the low 80’s Monday with a high chance for thunderstorms.
The US Drought Monitor indicates normal conditions in the mountains, but abnormally dry to our north and west in East Tennessee. Part of Grainger County is designated to be in a “Moderate Drought”. The website will be updated today. You can view the site by CLICKING HERE. Click on your region of interest, then your individual state to see a detailed view. The Drought Monitor is updated every Thursday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
