Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 72.2 degrees.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely today, with a high temperature in the middle to upper 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely every day this week through Saturday. This is going to be a wet week.
“Scattered showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected each day with locally heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding possible. Some storms may also produce strong wind gusts. The greatest coverage of rain and potential of flash flooding are expected with the remnants of tropical storm Fred for Tuesday and Wednesday”, according to the National Weather Service.
Watch for quickly rising water this week. Flash flooding is possible. If you see this occurring, get out of the stream on the road side or trail side. You don’t want to get stuck on the wrong side.
Little River is flowing at 87.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.54 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 109 cfs. The water temperature is 72.5 degrees at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend.
Scattered storms overnight affected the flows at some streams in the mountains. Oconaluftee River and Tellico River are flowing higher than normal. Little Pigeon River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing below normal.
Streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the middle 60’s or colder. Dry flies and nymph will produce for you. A dry and dropper rig is a good choice. Try a terrestrial dry fly with a bead head nymph or Green Weenie dropper. Nymph rigs may work best when water levels rise due to rain over the next few days.
Many lowland rivers are flowing low, at least for now. Fish the deeper pools with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
It appears TVA and the Corps will be generating later this morning or this afternoon at most dams in the area. There are tailwater wade fishing options earlier below some dams. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
When the weather forecasters are calling for thunderstorms with possible strong winds, I tend to stay off the lakes. You might go early today as the higher chance for storms is supposed to be later today. I don’t see any storms on the radar in the area right now. My advice would be, stay fairly close to the ramp, just in case. Fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
Walter Babb called me yesterday, something he does about every weekend since he started selling some of his bamboo rods. He sold four yesterday. And, he has sold 21 of the 61 rods he intends to sell. We built a web page a few weeks ago to advertise the rods he is selling. I mark them as “sold” on the page after the sale which I will do after finishing this fishing report. I am doing this for Walter as a friend, at no charge. Most of the buyers are meeting Walter at his home and casting the rod or rods they intend to purchase. Walter and I are both happy about how this online advertising is working. If you are interested, don’t wait too long. Give Walter a call.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

WALTER BABB MADE BAMBOO FLY RODS FOR SALE – CLICK HERE
Walter is selling a selection of over 50 bamboo fly rods. All but one was made by him. The other one was custom made for Walter by Walton Powell. Read the description of each rod on the list and contact him if you are interested in buying one or more than one. Even if you are not interested in a purchase, this web page is very interesting to read. Walter has made over 285 bamboo rods over the past 20-years. You will be working directly with Walter on a purchase and you can test cast the rods before you buy one at his home. Or, call him and he will ship a rod to you. His contact information is on the web page he and I created.
