Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 68.2 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms and rain showers affected our area yesterday. Rainfall amounts varied, .46” Dry Valley, 1.2” Townsend, .29” Cades Cove, .36” Cherokee, NC., .52” Cosby, .58” Gatlinburg and 1.29” at the Knoxville Airport.
The remnants of Tropical Depression Fred will move through today and tonight. Showers and possible thunderstorms are likely today, with a high temperature in the middle to upper 70’s. We are under a flash flood watch. Rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches are possible today, with another 1 to 2 inches tonight. Locally higher amounts are possible. “Flash flooding is expected to occur. Mudslides are also possible”, According to the National Weather Service.
More rain is predicted tomorrow through Friday.
Little River is flowing at 139 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 115 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal.
Knowing that we are under a flash flood watch, fishing in the mountains is probably not a good idea today. Streams may rise quickly without warning, due to heavy rain upstream. From the models I saw this morning, I don’t think there is any doubt there will be flash flooding occurring today and tonight.
Most lowland rivers are flowing at about normal right now. That probably won’t be the case later.
There are some tailwater fishing opportunities today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
I suppose you could go lake fishing today if you don’t mind fishing during heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms. That would not be my choice.
It is raining now though the worst weather appears to be far to our south, mostly in Georgia, on the radar. I think it is going to be raining all day. We could use the rain but this is probably going to be too much.
