Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 67.3 degrees.
Thunderstorms moved through our county early yesterday morning. Over an inch fell at the Knoxville Airport, with totals over one half of an inch in Townsend.
This is going to be a hot week, with high temperatures near or in the low 90’s each day. Expect lows in the upper 60’s. Rain will return to the forecast Wednesday and each day through the end of the week.
Little River is flowing at 345 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.37 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 112 cfs. The water temperature is 65.3 degrees this morning.
The rain that fell here yesterday does not seem to have affected stream levels much in the mountains. Most streams have receded to a good fishing level, and they are flowing higher than normal.
Water temperatures will rise this week, so plan to fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temps in the middle 60’s or cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. You may want to try a terrestrial dry fly with a nymph dropper. I would use a Green Weenie or small bead head nymph dropped off my dry fly. Or, weighted nymph rigs will work too.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal but they are receding. Wading may be limited in some rivers today. Little River looks good. It will be sunny today so you may want to go early or late, or fish the shaded areas if the river you are fishing has tree canopy. Use poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish should be good.
There are several tailwater fishing options for you today. There will be periods of no to low generation at many dams in the area. It looks like they will be generating at Douglas Dam and Appalachia Dam all day. Visit the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are.
I would be launching our boat on a lake at daybreak and plan to fish until later this morning. Cast to the shaded banks until the sun is high. Try poppers or foam floating flies. If they are not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs.
I will be off for several days this week, fishing with good friends. Daniel will be writing this report until Friday.
I hope you have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
