Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 67.8 degrees.
Today will be sunny and hot, with a high temperature in the high 80’s and a slight chance for showers or thunderstorms. It will be hot again tomorrow, reaching the upper 80’s with a low chance for thunderstorms. Tuesday will be much cooler, with a high in the upper 70’s. Rain is likely Tuesday and Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 184 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.93 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 94 cfs. The water temperature is 68.0 degrees this morning.
Most trout streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler for the health of the trout you catch and release. Look for water temperatures in the middle 60’s or cooler. You can find cooler water early in the middle elevations. You may have to move higher later today when the temperatures rise. A thermometer is a handy accessory to have in your vest.
Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Try a dry fly with a nymph or Green Weenie dropper and you should do well. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. Stay hidden from the trout and get a good drift. You will catch more trout.
Lowland rivers are flowing fairly low but not as low as normal in August. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught in the deeper pools on poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns. Go early or late when the sun is off the water or fish shaded areas where tree canopy is present.
There are some tailwater trout and smallmouth bass fishing opportunities today. Check the TVA website to see what your options are. TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams later today. Plan accordingly.
It is going to be hot on the lakes today. I would launch early and fish until the sun is high. When I can’t find shaded banks to fish, I would go home. I always try poppers or foam floating flies first. If that is not working, I switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. It is a good idea to have two fly rods in your boat for each angler so you can switch from top water to subsurface flies easily and quickly.
Hurricane Ida is a category 4 tracking toward Louisiana, making landfall today. This is a dangerous storm, that will also affect Mississippi and parts of Alabama. I pray for the safety of our coastal friends in its path.
This is awful news. A man from Georgia drowned in the pool below Abrams Falls Friday. You can read more on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE. The pool is a popular swimming hole that has taken lives before. They say the pool is 30 feet in spots.
August is usually a slow month at the shop and this year is no exception. Who wants to get out and fish on extremely hot days? After tomorrow, it is going to be much cooler through early September. Expect highs is the 70’s to low 80’s with lows in the 50’s some nights.
I went fishing last week and the heat was brutal. Fishing was very good. My buddies and I were fishing the Cumberland River tailwater below Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky for trout. Some of the guys fished on Hatchery Creek and did well. Seven of us stayed in a big house we rented, on the river. We had a great time!
Have a great day yourself and thank you for being here with us.
