Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:03 am, the temperature is 68.0 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today, then overcast later, with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. It will be much cooler tomorrow through Thursday, with highs in the upper 70’s to 80 degrees. Rain will move into Tennessee tonight and continue through Wednesday. Heavy rain is possible as we will be affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. A flash flood watch has been issued for Tuesday through Wednesday. The heaviest rain should be to our west.
Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.86 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 89 cfs. The water temperature is 68.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal, but at good fishing levels for August. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations today, where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. A buggy looking terrestrial dry fly with a small bead head nymph or Green Weenie dropper is a good choice for your rig. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding.
Lowland rivers are flowing fairly low but higher than normal. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught on poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns. Fish the deeper shaded pools. It should be overcast later today, which is beneficial, especially if you plan to fish rivers lacking tree canopy.
There are tailwater fishing opportunities today, especially early. Check the TVA website to see what your options are and plan accordingly.
This could be a very good lake fishing day due to the likely overcast conditions. I would cast to the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
Hurricane Ida delt a devastating blow to Louisiana, leaving people trapped by high water and more than 1 million people and businesses without power. The storm is moving north through Mississippi. Heavy rain, high winds and possible tornados are predicted in the storm’s path.
Tennessee is in the direct path of the storm. Middle Tennessee is recovering from heavy rain and flooding that occurred just a week ago. 2 to 5 inches of rain with locally heavier amounts is predicted in the Nashville area with 3 to 4 inches or more on the Cumberland Plateau. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches will be possible here. States to our northeast will be affected as well, including Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and others.
Have a good day and thank you for being here with us.
