Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 65.3 degrees.
It will be sunny and pleasant today with a high temperature in the upper 70’s falling to the upper 50’s tonight. Friday and Saturday will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the low 80’s, dipping to the low 60’s at night. We have a chance for thunderstorms Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 1,670 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 4.21 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 82 cfs. The water temperature is 64.4 degrees.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing too high to safely wade and fish. They are all receding. There may be some small streams that will be fishable by tomorrow and Friday. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Lowland rivers are likely all flowing high and unsafe to wade today. Some may be stained, especially in the lower reaches.
There are angler friendly flows on several tailwaters in the region. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are today.
It will be sunny today so I would go fishing on the lakes early or late when the sun is off the water. TVA is generating and spilling at Fort Loudoun and Watts Bar dams. Some lakes may be stained and littered with debris, especially those on the Tennessee River. TVA and the Corps are holding back water at the tributary dams at least for now, causing some lake levels to rise. They will begin lowering the lakes soon to provide water storage capacity through the Fall and Winter.
Fish the banks with streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies.
Last month was the second wettest August on record in the Tennessee Valley. An average of 9.78 inches of rain fell. That compares to 11.86” in August 1901 and 8.55” in 1920.
According to the long term weather forecast, we are going to enjoy cooler temperatures through mid-September. That can change of course. The streams flowing from the mountains to the Tennessee River will be flowing at higher than normal levels. There will be more opportunities for you to fish the lower elevation trout streams in the mountains due to cooler water temperatures. September should turn out to be an excellent fishing month.
This is good news.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
