Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 61.9 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 80’s, falling to the low 60’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, with a high in the low to middle 80’s and a low in the middle 60’s at night. We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms Sunday night. Labor Day will be partly sunny and cooler, with a low in the low 80’s, dropping to the low 60’s Monday night. There is a chance for showers Monday.
Little River is flowing at 549 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 91 cfs. The river is receding. The water temperature is 63.1 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 737 cfs, 2.45 feet, compared to median flow of 175 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 649 cfs, 2.12 feet, compared to median flow of 206 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 767 cfs, 2.70 feet, compared to median flow of 79 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 87.2 cfs, 2.53 feet, compared to median flow of 48 cfs.
Stream flows we have in the mountains today are more like what we see during the Spring. Many streams are fishable and safe to wade, but the current is strong in some rivers or areas of rivers. Be careful wading. Water temperatures are very good, especially for early September.
These flows are perfect for fishing weighted nymph rigs. You may also do well with dry flies. Try a large terrestrial dry with a bead head nymph dropper.
The streams will continue to slowly recede over the weekend but there is a chance for rising water Sunday night and Monday morning.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Safe wading will be limited in some. Stand in safe water and cast poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish should be active.
There are angler friendly flows on some tailwaters at times today, but not so at others. Search through the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are and plan your day accordingly.
Expect heavy recreation boat traffic on the lakes today so go fishing early. I would launch at daybreak and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. Fish the shaded banks this morning. You might want to cut the fishing day short when the sun is higher and shade is hard to find.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will enjoy Fall-like temperatures next week with only a slight chance for rain after Monday.
