Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 68.9 degrees.
We got a little rain overnight, .25 inches. There is a low chance for more showers this morning until about 7:00 am. It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the low 80’s, dropping to the low 60’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 341 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.36 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 93 cfs. The water temperature is 63.5 degrees this morning.
Most, if not all streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal but at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are cool, for now. We will see some warming today and tomorrow but temperatures should be fine in the middle to higher elevations.
Dry flies or nymphs will work for you. You should do well using weighted nymph rigs, a dry and nymph dropper, or fishing dry flies alone. Try terrestrial dries. Land based insects are very active.
Lowland rivers are flowing at good levels. Wading may be limited in some rivers. Conditions are very favorable for smallmouth bass, rock bass and other lowland river species. Try poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns. Fish the shaded areas of the rivers or go early and late for better fishing.
I see some tailwater trout fishing options on the TVA website this morning, especially if you go early and choose the right sections of rivers to fish. TVA and the Corps will be generating at some dams later this morning. They are generating at Appalachia Dam all day.
It could be crowded with pleasure boaters on the lakes today. I would go early, at daybreak and fish until the sun is high and shining on the water. It may be cloudy for a while this morning, and possibly this afternoon, which would be perfect and extend your fishing day. The wind will be light.
Cast poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs to the banks. Smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and other species should be active in shallow water until the sun drives them deeper.
I told one of our neighbors Saturday, that we have not seen many bears this year. He has game cameras around his house, and told me they are visited by bears almost every night. Their house is a quarter of a mile from ours. I guess we have the same bears at our home too.
He told me about an accident that occurred near his home last week. Someone was driving on Old Cades Cove Road and a bear ran out into the road in front of the car or truck. The driver swerved to miss the bear, but crashed into something, probably a tree. The vehicle was badly damaged but the bear was missed. I drive slow, especially early in the morning on my way to work. It is often foggy. You never know when a bear will walk or run out into the road in front of you around here. It has happened to me several times.
We will be open today and waiting for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
