Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 63.1 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 80’s dropping to the middle 60’s tonight. Tomorrow will be cooler, in the low 80’s with a chance for showers and thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast every day thereafter through Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 139 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 64.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures have been cool at all elevations but we will encounter warmer water in the low elevations later today. You may want to fish a little higher, where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Fishing in the Smokies is good, especially for September.
Lowland rivers have receded but they are still flowing higher than normal. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish can be caught in the deeper pools and runs. Fish the shaded areas of the rivers if there is tree canopy. Poppers and foam floating flies should work. Nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns may work as well. I would go early or late when the sun is low today.
There are wade fishing options on some tailwaters today. There is generation scheduled at most dams later this morning or afternoon with full generation at some dams all day, including Appalachia and Douglas dams. TVA and the Corps of Engineers are lower the lakes and that will continue to provide water storage during the Fall and Winter months.
This will be a fair lake fishing day but I would go early or late when the sun is low. Winds will be light. Cast poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs to the shaded banks. We should see partly cloudy skies beginning tomorrow and lasting through the end of the week.
Traffic has been light in Townsend. One reason is, the Cades Cove Loop Road is closed for resurfacing through September 27th. Keep that in mind before planning a fishing day on the upper section of Abrams Creek near the Abrams Falls Trailhead.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
