Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 65.8 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 80’s and a chance for showers and thunderstorms. Tonight’s low will be around 60 degrees with a chance for thunderstorms and showers. Tomorrow will be sunny and cooler with a high in the upper 70’s, falling to the middle 50’s at night.
That is going to feel like Fall.
Little River is flowing at 239 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.10 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 64 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal and at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are cool at most elevations.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Try a buggy looking terrestrial pattern for your dry fly. You might consider dropping a bead head nymph or Green Weenie off your dry fly.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing at good levels that are higher than normal. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish are active. Fish the shaded areas with poppers or foam floating flies. Fish the deep pools and runs with streamers, nymphs, or crayfish patterns.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams. There are breaks in the generation schedules, especially early, at others. If you plan to fish on a tailwater today, search through the TVA web pages to find angler friendly flows.
They say today will be mostly sunny but there may be overcast conditions at times. It may also be a little breezy. This is probably a good day to be fly fishing on the lakes, at least until the sun is high with no cloud cover. I would still go early and fish the shaded banks. If there is cloud cover, fishing will be better and you may fish longer. Try poppers or foam floating flies. If they are not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for possible thunderstorms.
The Cades Cove Loop Road is closed to all vehicle traffic, pedestrians, cyclists and horseback riders until September 27th for resurfacing the roadway. I didn’t see that coming and I read the local news every morning before writing this report.
This is a good time to be closing the road because traffic is very light, at least in Townsend. There will be less disappointed visitors. There is probably a sign at the “Y”, alerting people the Cove road is closed. I am assuming the campground is open.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
