Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:30 am, the temperature is 64.9 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy early this morning with a chance for showers. Light rain fell overnight in the Townsend area. Cloudy skies will become sunny later today, with a high temperature in the upper 70’s and a low tonight in the middle 50’s. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high temperature in the upper 70’s, falling again to the middle to upper 50’s at night. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and warmer.
Little River is flowing at 256 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.15 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 84 cfs. The water temperature is 65.3 degrees this morning.
Most rivers and streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal and at excellent fishing levels. Water temperatures are good, even in the low elevations and we will see those numbers fall tonight through Saturday morning.
Fall officially begins on September 22nd this year, though it is going to feel like Fall for a couple of days right now. Fishing conditions are good in the Smokies. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. The choice is yours. My dry fly would be a terrestrial, but most reasonable patterns will work. Trout are looking for food and land based insects are plentiful. Drop a bead head nymph or Green Weenie off your dry fly, doubling your odds.
Fishing in the lowland rivers for smallmouth bass is good. Will told me yesterday, he and a friend floated lower Little River in kayaks this week and did very well. Fish streamers, poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs or crayfish patterns. You will catch rock bass and panfish too.
If you want to fish a tailwater today, you have many choices. Most schedules indicate generation will begin later this morning or this afternoon. There are exceptions. Generation at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky will begin early. They will be churning the turbines all day and night at Appalachia Dam and the will also be spilling, to lower the lake. Check the TVA website to plan your day.
Today may be a good lake fishing day. It should be overcast part of the day. That is a plus. It may become slightly breezy at times with the wind out of the north at 5 to 10 miles per hour. That could be an issue trying to control your craft while trying to creep along the banks. Cast poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs along the shore near structure.
Henry Cowan wrote a very interesting article for Fly Fisherman Magazine. You can read it by CLICKING HERE. Henry answers the question, “if fly fishing had a Mount Rushmore, who would be carved in stone?”
One would be Joe Brooks. I think everyone would agree with that.
Next would be Lee Wulff. He is a fly fishing legend, who brought many people to the sport. I never met Lee but I do know his wife Joan. She is a legend too.
Next would be Lefty Kreh. I have spent a lot of time with Lefty and I don’t think I have met anyone with that amount of fly fishing knowledge. Lefty treated me like a son. I treated him like a Dad. I always did what Lefty told me to do in the fly fishing business.
Who would the last one be? Dave Whitlock is Henry’s choice and I could not agree more. I don’t know Dave well, but I did have the honor of sitting across from him at dinner once. We were in Denver and it was his birthday. Dave is a gentleman, with absolutely no pretense. That man is talented.
Good job Henry! If you ever get the chance to watch Henry tie flies, do it. He is amazing. I think he still lives in the Atlanta area. His fly fishing specialty is catching stripers.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
