Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 65.3 degrees.
A tiny storm hovered over the Townsend area as rain began falling at 6:09 pm yesterday evening. It poured at our house, with .99 inches recorded at a personal weather station nearby. In Townsend near the shop, a 10 minute drive from here, a personal weather station reported less rain, .15 inches.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 80’s, and a good chance for showers and thunderstorms. Tonight’s low will be in the low 60’s. Friday and Saturday will bring more of the same, fairly cool temperatures, showers and possible thunderstorms.
Official Fall 2021 begins next week, on Wednesday September 22nd. Cooler temperatures are predicted, with highs in the upper 70’s and lows in the upper 50’s beginning Wednesday and lasting through the end of the month.
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.72 feet on the gauge. It appears little if any rain fell yesterday in the upper Little River watershed. Median flow for this date is 76 cfs. The water temperature is 64.9 degrees this morning.
Rain did fall in some areas of the Smokies yesterday. Water levels rose slightly in some rivers and streams. Overall, flows are higher than normal in the rivers that have USGS gauge sites, but still at good fishing levels. Dry flies and nymphs are working. Fishing has been good in the mountains.
Most lowland rivers exiting the mountains and meandering through the foothills are flowing a little higher than normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good under these conditions. Try poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns. This should be a good fishing day, barring heavy rain, as it will be overcast.
There will be angler friendly flows for wade fishing in some tailwaters today, especially early. Flows at some dams are not so angler friendly for wading or even boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
This could turn out to be a good lake fishing day, except for the possibility of thunderstorms. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy with light winds. Light winds could become strong winds in thunderstorms. Cast to the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
When I say “Foam Floating Flies” when fishing on lakes, lowland rivers or tailwaters, my choice is always the only fly I ever invented, Byron’s Knucklehead. I came up with this fly during the Winter of 2011. I originally called it a Knucklehead but added my name because during internet searches, there are many things called Knuckleheads, including people, dogs, cats and motorcycles. This fly was originally tied to fish for smallmouth bass in moving rivers. Later I found it works well in lakes for bass and other species. Then, it turned out to be a good fly to catch large trout.
You can learn to tie this fly by CLICKING HERE.
Or, you can buy the black version from us by CLICKING HERE. I have a mini factory set up in my office at the shop to tie those we sell and I try to keep up. I have not had a problem keeping up this year because this fly has not been selling well online. I found out why. Our online store thought we were out of stock. I fixed that and started tying them again this week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
