Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 64.2 degrees.
We have a low chance for thunderstorms today, with a high temperature in the low 80’s, falling to the middle 60’s tonight. It will be mostly sunny today. There is a higher chance for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. The high temperature will be in the low 80s with a low in the middle 60’s tomorrow night. There is a chance for showers Sunday with rain likely Sunday night and Monday.
Little River is flowing at 119 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 65.5 degrees.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Some got a bump yesterday due to spotty showers in the area. Water temperatures are good at most elevations, though slightly warm in the lowest elevations.
Fishing conditions in the Smokies are good for September. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Now that the streams have receded to lower levels, stealth is essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest and stay low if you can, so you don’t spook the trout.
Next week, beginning Wednesday, a cold front will move into our area. We can expect high temperatures in the 70’s with lows in the 50’s through the end of September. These conditions will be ideal for fishing the larger rivers in the low elevations.
Wednesday will be the first day of Fall. Leaves are beginning to turn right now. Before long, we will be seeing brown trout in the rivers during the daylight hours, preparing to spawn. Every angler I know is looking forward to Fall fishing and it won’t be far off.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal for the most part. You can catch smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish in the deeper pools and runs. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crayfish imitations should all work. Fishing will be best early or late in rivers that do not have tree canopy present unless the cloud cover lingers today.
There are a few tailwater options for you today. TVA will be generating early at Cherokee and Douglas dams. Discharges at Norris Dam look good early today. Check the schedule at Center Hill and Norris Dams. You can work with those. The Corps will be generating and sluicing at Wolf Creek Dam. TVA will be generating and spilling at Appalachia Dam all day and night. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Go to the lakes early or late. It will probably be sunny later today. Cast to the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
