Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 67.8 degrees.
Much cooler air is moving into the Smokies today, with showers likely every day through Wednesday. Heavy rain is possible during the period. High temperatures will be in the 70’s to about 80 degrees with lows in the middle 60’s through Tuesday night. Low temperatures will fall into the 40’s Thursday night and Friday night.
Little River is flowing at 218 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.04 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 64.8 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies were affected by rainfall last night, including Little Pigeon River, Cataloochee Creek and Oconaluftee River. Those rivers and streams are receding and are flowing at good fishing levels.
Fishing will be good at all elevations today, though there is a chance for heavy rain that could raise water levels and cause temporary staining. Nymphs and dry flies will work for you.
Most lowland rivers are flowing a good levels this morning. It will be cloudy to mostly cloudy today and tomorrow which is always a good condition for fly fishing in these rivers. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs are crayfish patterns will probably all work for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish.
There will be periods of no generation or pulsing early at several dams with discharges starting later this morning. Generation at Norris Dam is predicted to begin early this morning. Plan to go early wherever you go and check the TVA website before going fishing on your favorite tailwater.
It will be overcast today which is great for fly fishing on the lakes. It may be breezy at times with winds out of the east at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Many anglers believe fishing will be slow on the lakes when the wind is blowing out of the east. I have found that to be true when fishing in the ocean. Cast to the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
I am looking forward to cool nights in the 40’s. Wednesday is the first day of Fall. Thursday night is going to feel like Fall. Mondays are my only day off, though I do go in to the shop at 7:30 am and work for a little while. One thing I am going to do today is unpack my Winter clothes. Before that, Paula and I will clean out the fireplace. This was a hot Summer and I’m over it. I love Fall, except for the fact that when I drive to work, it is dark.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
