Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 66.5 degrees.
Rainfall during the past 24 hours amounted to .23 inches at the Knoxville Airport, .76 inches in Townsend, .24 inches at Cades Cove and .20” in Gatlinburg. We got .52 inches near our house in Dry Valley.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the middle 70’s, falling to the middle 60’s tonight. There is a chance for showers and possibly thunderstorms today. Rain and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow, with a high in the low 70s and a low in the upper 40’s. Thursday will be sunny and cool, with a high temperature in the upper 60’s, dipping to the middle 40’s at night.
Low temperatures at Mount LeConte on Wednesday and Thursday nights are predicted to fall into the upper 30’s. Fall arrives Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 190 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.95 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 64.9 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal, but at good fishing levels this morning. Water temperatures are good at all elevations. Fly fishing for trout is good. Dry flies and nymphs will produce for you. Rain may affect water levels today but more likely to occur tomorrow.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing higher than normal and at good fishing levels. Fly fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish will be good. It will be overcast, a good condition for fishing these rivers. Fish may take top water flies so try poppers or foam floating flies. If that is not working, switch to nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are offering us several tailwater fishing choices today. There will be angler friendly flows at many dams, especially early. There are exceptions. Turbines will be churning at Center Hill Dam and Appalachia Dam all day. They are also spilling at Appalachia Dam.
Overcast skies and calm wind predicted today are good conditions for lake fishing. You may get wet and you could encounter thunderstorms later this afternoon. Cast to the banks with poppers, foam floaters, streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for schools of shad with game fish feeding on them, on the surface. This could be a good day for that kind of activity.
We are busy at the shop, preparing for the future. I am re-designing our website. Will is ordering and receiving fly tying materials, while building the inventory for the fly tying season we know is coming soon. Dave Anderson is adding lots of new flies to the online store, while ordering new flies to sell next Spring. Will is helping Dave with that when he has extra time. I am helping by photographing new flies and new fly tying materials.
Will and I are pretty much finished with a year-long project. We built our Fly Tying Materials and Tools Store, online. You can see it by CLICKING HERE. Click on the category options on the left side of the page to refine your search.
Until last year, we had never sold fly tying materials online. It was a huge job, photographing and adding 2,000 items to the category. Now we will be adding new materials and tools to the department in the shop, and to the online store. Our fly tying department is very large and growing quickly. We enlarged the fly tying area in the store to about 1,000 square feet almost a year ago. People found out what we have to offer and we are seeing many new customers as well as more visits from our regular customers.
Our fly department has grown significantly too. Dave Anderson has done a great job organizing and stocking the department while increasing sales in the shop and online. We have never had a fly selection like this one, or organized as well as it is now.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
