Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 46.2 degrees.
It will be sunny with no rain predicted through Sunday. High temperatures will be in the low to middle 70’s. The temperature will fall to the upper 40’s tonight, and the low to middle 50’s Saturday and Sunday nights. Calm winds are expected all weekend.
Fall is officially here and it will feel like it. This is going to be a beautiful weekend.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.25 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. The water temperature is 59.4 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams and rivers in the mountains are flowing higher than normal, but at good Spring-like fishing levels. Water temperatures are very good in the low to middle elevations. Streams in the high elevations are chilly, possibly causing trout to be fairly inactive, but they will warm later today. The temperatures are plunging this morning. Fishing may be best when the water starts warmer later in the high elevations. I would plan on fishing in the low elevations, in the larger rivers, or venture into the backcountry to the middle elevation streams.
Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Trout will be taking both. There are active terrestrial insects flying or crawling and they are still abundant. A beetle or buggy looking terrestrial dry fly would be my choice. Drop a bead head nymph or Green Weenie off your dry fly.
Water temperatures are within the smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish preferred range in the lowland rivers exiting the mountains. Flows are good in most of these rivers, though higher than normal. Streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns will work for sure. Poppers and foam floating flies may produce as well. Be prepared for everything.
TVA and the Corps will be generating later today, but most of the schedules I checked offer only intermittent generation this morning for pulsing purposes. They will be generating around the clock and sluicing at Center Hill Dam today. Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are and plan around their plans.
Lake fishing will be good today, but much better if you go early or late when the sun is off the water. Try poppers or foam floating flies first. If they are not working, switch to streamers or swimming nymphs. If you go early, it will be foggy for a while and the fog is predicted to be dense. Wind will not be an issue today and through the weekend.
This is going to be the nicest weekend for fishing we have seen in a long time. The only condition that would be better is cloud cover. That is not going to happen.
