Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:07 am, the temperature is 56.8 degrees.
Today through Friday will be sunny to mostly sunny with highs in the low to middle 80’s, falling to the low 60’s at night. We have a low chance for rain Saturday and Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 141 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.77 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 89 cfs. The water temperature is 60.3 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are receding, but still flowing higher than median flow. Cataloochee Creek is flowing at median flow for this date.
As the water levels fall, stealth will be important to your success. Dress to blend with the forest so you don’t spook the trout and you will catch more. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Fish the broken water in riffles, plunge pools and deeper runs.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. I would go early or late when the sun is off the water unless you are fishing a river that has tree canopy providing shade. Streamers, nymphs, poppers, foam floating flies and crayfish imitations will produce for you. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish will be actively feeding in the deeper pools and runs.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams in the area. You may find some tailwater fishing options further away. Check the TVA website from the links below and hopefully you can find a fishable tailwater.
Lake fishing will be best early or late. Cast to the dimly lit banks with poppers, foam floaters, streamers or swimming nymphs. Wind should not be an issue today.
Paula and I were walking to our neighbor’s house at about 5:30 last evening. A full grown large copperhead snake was lying motionless in our driveway. Thankfully we saw the snake first, before stepping on it. We walked around the snake, staying about four feet from it’s head. When we walked home a couple of hours later, it was gone but we were looking.
This is one of their mating seasons, a time when you see copperheads most often.
I was fishing on the Middle Prong of Little River one day and noticed someone’s lunch and soft drinks were left unattended next to the stream. That seemed strange. I walked over for a closer look and realized why the meal was abandoned. I heard the sound of a rattlesnake close by. I got the heck out of there quickly, just like those before me probably did.
One of my best friends is a retired physician who worked in the emergency room at our hospital in Maryville. He told me once he attended to several patients who had been bitten by poisonous snakes throughout his career.
They are out there and hard to see in the forest. The ones you don’t see are the most dangerous. Your chance of being bitten by a copperhead or rattlesnake is low. I only know one person that happened to. She recovered.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
