Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 61.3 degrees.
The first day of October is going to feel like Summer, with partly sunny skies and a high temperature in the low 80’s, falling to the upper 50’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 80’s again, and a low chance for afternoon thunderstorms. Sunday will be slightly cooler with greater chance for rain. Expect rain Sunday night through Thursday. High temperatures will be in the 70’s, Monday through Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 124 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.70 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 62.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or near median flow this morning. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the Smokies and through the valleys are at normal levels. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish are active. Fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floaters, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns. I would go early or late, especially if the river you intend to fish lacks tree canopy for shade.
TVA and the Corps will be generating or sluicing at many dams today. If you are searching for angler friendly flows, you might want to look closely at the Norris, Wilbur and Chatuge schedules. Maybe you can work with those.
Lake fishing is good, but you may want to go early or late unless we do have cloud cover. The weather forecast calls for partly sunny conditions or partly cloudy skies, whichever description you prefer. Cast to the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. The wind is supposed to be calm today. This could be a good lake fishing day.
I love October. The views in the Smokies are incredible during the leaf season. It will be cooler. We are starting next week with rain, that will hopefully keep our streams brimming with water. The long term weather forecast indicates a chance for rain every day through mid-month.
Elk and deer are in rut. Black bear are busy feeding on hard mast, bulking up for the winter. Bear activity is very high right now. The young of the year wild turkeys look almost like adults.
In a month, or maybe a little longer, we can start feeding birds again, with a lower chance for bears destroying our feeders. We bring the feeders inside at night. We are looking forward to that.
We have been hearing the rumors for what seems like a year. It is official now. Gun maker Smith and Wesson is moving their headquarters and manufacturing facility to our county. They will employ 750 people. Construction will begin this year. You can read more on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
