Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 62.8 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the low 80’s and a slight chance for rain late this afternoon. Tomorrow will be cooler with a high in the middle to upper 70’s. Rain and possibly a thunderstorm is likely after 2 pm. Showers and thunderstorms are likely Sunday night and each day through Thursday next week.
Little River is flowing at 117 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 80 cfs. The water temperature is 62.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams and rivers in the Smokies are flowing near normal for this date with water temperatures being within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Though the streams are flowing near normal, normal is low in early October. Stealth and fly presentation are essential to your success. Don’t spook the trout and get a good drift. You will catch more.
Lowland rivers are flowing near normal after exiting the mountains and meandering through the valleys. You should do well fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish. Fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns. I would go early or late.
There are a few tailwater fishing options today but not as many as we would like to see. Check the TVA website to find a generation schedule you can work with.
Lake fishing should be fine, especially if you go early or late when the sun is low and shaded banks can be found. Wind should not be a problem today. I would cast to the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be holding a virtual public meeting, and accepting public comments about the proposed expansion of the Foothills Parkway from Wears Valley Road to near Gatlinburg. The new road addition would be about 10 miles long. Additionally, there are proposed plans to improve the Wears Cove entrance to Metcalf Bottoms. You can read more on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
The virtual meeting is planned for October 14th for one hour beginning at 5:00 pm.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
