Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 64.9 degrees.
Light rain fell almost all day yesterday, amounting to .22 inches in Townsend. Heavy rain fell last night, with totals of 1.57 inches in Townsend and 1.21 inches in Cades Cove. Almost no rain fell in Gatlinburg overnight.
Today will be partly cloudy with a high temperature in the middle 70’s and a chance for showers all day. Rain will continue through at least Thursday night. Rain chances through Thursday range from 80% to 90%. Heavy rain during the period is possible, which may cause localized flooding. Expect highs in the middle 70’s with lows in the low 60’s through Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 173 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.89 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. Little River is currently rising. The water temperature is 63.3 degrees.
Several larger streams were affected by rain last night. Some are rising and others are receding. So far, no streams would be considered blown out though some may be temporarily stained this morning.
This may be a good fishing day in the mountains unless the streams rise higher this morning. Nymphs will probably work best today. Dry flies may work too, depending on the water conditions.
Some lowland rivers are rising and they may be stained, especially further downstream where heavy rain fell and muddy tributaries are merging. Streamers and nymphs will probably work best if you do find suitable flows and clear water in the river you are fishing.
There are a few tailwater wade fishing options this morning and more if you are boating. TVA will be generating at Norris Dam all day. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
This may be a good lake fishing day. Winds will be calm. It will be cloudy at times. But, there is a chance for rain. I would plan to cast to the shaded banks with streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers and foam floating flies.
We had a busy weekend at the shop. I spent most of the day yesterday, going through historic sales numbers and adjusting our auto-order inventory for Whiting Farms. We just got a nice shipment from Whiting, and I’m going to place another one this week.
The best way to work with Whiting is to place orders, knowing it will take a while to get everything on that order, usually one or two months. Plan ahead and give them time. It takes a year to grow their chickens. We can’t expect things to happen quickly. Phil and Jake, they guys I work with at Whiting are very nice and helpful. They take very good care of us.
It is raining now and the rain is heavy. I also heard thunder. It is really hard to say right now, what fishing will be like in the Smokies this week. Only time will tell.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
