Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 57.6 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature around 80 degrees, falling to the upper 50’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 80’s and a low in the low 60’s. Rain chances are low this week, with a fair chance for rain Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 307 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 61.7 degrees this morning.
Streams and rivers in the Smokies have receded but all are still flowing higher than normal. Normal this time of the year is low. What you will find are Spring-like flows, wherever you go in the mountains.
Water temperatures will be good at most elevations today. Trout will be taking nymphs for sure and possibly dry flies too. Terrestrials are still good fly choices. Try a fairly large buggy looking dry with a Green Weenie dropper. Or, fish with a weighted double nymph rig.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish will be active. Nymphs or streamers will produce. Poppers and foam floating flies may work as well.
There are a few choices today for tailwater anglers in our area. Check the predicted flows at Norris and Cherokee dams. You will have more choices if you are boating.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is low. Winds will be calm today. Work the shaded banks with streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies.
This will be a good fishing day for you except in some tailwaters. Tomorrow will be another good fishing day. You may be off tomorrow for Columbus Day. We will be open for you, as usual.
Today is the last day for us to order hooks and beads from Firehole until early November. Owners Joe and Deb Mathis are moving from Bozeman, Montana to the Flathead River area in northern Montana. They have built a new 12,000 square foot facility there, and plan to be open in the new location around November 2nd.
Though we just received a shipment from Firehole yesterday, Will placed a much larger order in anticipation of their move and temporary shutdown. We are also increasing our total fly tying department inventory from many suppliers. We know fly tying season is upon us, or will be soon and we are ready.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
