Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 61.3 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 70’s with a low in the low 60’s. Tomorrow and Friday will be mostly sunny and warmer with highs in the low 80’s. Saturday will be cool and wet. Expect a high in the middle 60’s, a low in the low 40’s and rain. Sunday will be sunny again with a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the low 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 181 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.92 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 61.3 degrees this morning.
All the USGS Gauge Sites in the Smokies indicate higher than normal flows but at very good fishing levels. Water temperatures are good at most elevations. This is a good week to be fishing in the Smokies. Dry flies and nymphs will produce for you.
Rivers exiting the mountains and flowing through the valleys are at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are well within the smallmouth bass preferred range. Fishing will be good at least through Friday. Try poppers or foam floating flies. If they are not producing strikes, switch to streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
TVA and the Corps are generating for long periods at many dams today. They are sluicing at some dams. I noticed a long break at South Holston Dam. There may be other tailwater fishing options so check the TVA website from the links below to see what they are.
Today through Friday appear to be good lake fishing days. Surface temperatures will be warm, especially for October. Winds are predicted to be calm. It will be sunny through the period so I would go early, when the sun is low. Cast to the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
We are enjoying beautiful Fall weather, more like we see in late Spring or Summer. We are busy at the shop. A lot of people are fly fishing right now. Those who tie flies are buying materials and tools, getting ready for Winter, when there are less fishing opportunities where they live, especially in the northeast United States.
The long term weather forecast looks good in our region through October 27th. We may get through October without our first frost in the low elevations.
Enjoy what we have while we can.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
