Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 66.5 degrees.
Showers are likely and possibly a thunderstorm today with a high temperature around 61 degrees. Winds will be out of the northwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. The chance for rain will end this afternoon as temperatures fall. Tonight will be clear with a low temperature around 41 degrees. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 60’s dropping to the low 40’s tomorrow night.
Rain is falling now and it is fairly heavy as a small storm is passing through the Townsend area.
The low temperature tonight is predicted to be 31 degrees at Mount LeConte and 35 degrees at Newfound Gap.
Little River is flowing at 146 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.79 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 88 cfs. The water temperature is 63.3 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal but at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are good at most elevations but we will see the streams chill later today and tonight. There is a chance for scattered thunderstorms so some streams may rise and become stained. Nymphs and dry flies should produce for you.
Rivers exiting the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are good this morning. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best for smallmouth bass. The fish may take poppers or foam floating flies until the water temperatures fall late today and for sure tonight.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day and some dams and not at others. Check the schedule at Norris Dam. That may be an opportunity at least until later today. See what you think about the schedule at South Holston Dam.
This may be a good lake fishing day. It should be overcast, especially early, which is a good condition. It may also be breezy at times which is not a good condition. In fact, it is fairly windy right now at our house.
Streamers and swimming nymphs would be my choice, though gamefish may still be taking surface flies. The only way to find out is try. As water temperatures fall, fishing with sub-surface flies will work best on the lakes and lowland rivers.
Visitors love traveling to Townsend in the Fall and they are here. But, until today, it has felt like Summer. Not anymore. The long term weather forecast looks totally different. We can expect high temperatures in the 60’s to low 70’s and lows in the 40’s and 50’s through the end of the month. That will be nice.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
