Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:33 am, the temperature is 42.8 degrees.
It will be sunny today and warm up later to the low 60’s, falling to the low 40’s again tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the upper 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 156 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 59.0 degrees and falling.
All streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal and most rose yesterday temporarily due to rain. Water temperatures are fine in the lower elevations but they are still falling. By comparison, the water temperature at Cataloochee Creek is 53.4 degrees currently, and falling.
Trout should be active, though sometimes they react to falling water temperatures by becoming less active. Fishing may be better later today when the water temperatures begin to rise. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you.
Lowland rivers are colder today, but flowing well. The water temperatures should remain in the preferred range for smallmouth bass. They may not be hitting top water flies. Nymphs or streamers could work best.
TVA and the Corps are generating all day at some local dams or off and on at others. Tailwater anglers do not have many options but there are some, if you plan carefully and especially if you are boating. Check the TVA website to see what your options are.
This will be a fair lake fishing day. It will be sunny and somewhat breezy this afternoon. Water temperatures on the lakes will be falling as the unseasonably warm days and nights have changed to normal. I think top water fishing will be less productive as the surface temperatures fall. I believe you will do best going early or late when the sun is low and cast streamers or swimming nymphs to the banks.
Will and I spent the last two days stocking the fly tying department well and it is just in time. More tyers will be tying, now that the days and nights are colder. He received and displayed a large Whiting Farms order, shortly after doing the same thing two weeks ago. We are now stocking 100 packs again. A 100 Packs contains enough Whiting saddle hackle to tie 100 dry flies, of a specific color or size.
You will now see several colors but mostly #12 to #16 sizes. #12 feathers are hard to get because some Whiting roosters do not produce saddle hackle that large anymore. We have those in brown and grizzly. #18 and #20 size feathers are hard to get because demand is high. That is not a problem, at least for mountain anglers because they usually buy #14 and #16 feathers. Those have always been the best selling sizes at our shop. We will try to buy #18 100 packs in the future in some colors. And, we may stock #20 too.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
