Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 41.5 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer today with a high temperature in the low to middle 70’s, dropping to the upper 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warm with a high in the middle 70’s and a low in the low 50’s at night.
Little River is flowing at 121 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.69 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. The water temperature is 54.3 degrees and falling.
Streams in the mountains continue to flow higher than median flow for this date. Water temperatures are cool in the higher elevations. At Cataloochee Creek, the water temperature is currently 48.2 degrees. Higher elevation streams will be cooler than Cataloochee. We will see the water temperatures warm somewhat over the next couple of days.
Fishing will be best in the low to middle elevation streams where the water is warmer today. Dry flies and nymphs are working.
Lowland rivers are flowing at slightly higher levels for this time of the year, but normal is low. Smallmouth bass should be active. Streamers and nymphs will likely work better than top water flies, due to the cooler water temperatures.
Tailwater wade fishing options are very limited today in our area due to frequent and long periods of generation at the dams. You may find some reasonable flows in the region, especially if you are boating. Check the TVA website to see what options are available.
Bright sunny days are not great lake fishing days. Go early or late when the sun is low. Streamers or swimming nymphs will likely work better than poppers or foam floating flies.
It is leaf season and there are many visitors in the Smokies. Traffic was heavy this past weekend, with less vehicles and people in Townsend yesterday. This coming weekend will be beautiful again, sunny and warm. There will be many visitors again in the Smokies. When the leaves turn and fall, everything changes. The crowds will be gone.
Fall fishing in the mountains can be very good in November. It depends on water temperatures of course. The long term weather forecast looks favorable for anglers through the end of October to November 2nd. It will be warm, at least in the lower elevations. Fishing should be good through the period.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
