Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 41.5 degrees.
This is going to be another beautiful Fall day. It will be sunny with a high temperature in the low to middle 70’s, falling into the low 50’s tonight. It will be warm and breezy tomorrow with a good chance for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 114 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.66 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 80 cfs. the water temperature is 54.0 degrees at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend.
Streams in the Smokies are still flowing higher than normal but normal is low. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations, but chilly in the high elevation streams. Fishing will be best in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Dry flies and nymphs will work.
Stealth is essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Fish the broken water in plunge pools, riffles and runs. The streams are flowing fairly low and clear. If the trout do not see you, you will catch more.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains and flowing through the valleys are at higher than normal levels. Smallmouth bass will be fairly active and taking streamers or nymphs. Where trout are stocked in the rivers, fishing will be good. Use nymphs, streamers or egg patterns.
TVA and the Corps are churning water at most dams in our area all day. I did see breaks in the generation schedules that may be workable for tailwater wading anglers to our east and south so check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
This may be a good lake fishing day. The forecast calls for partly sunny skies early. Winds will be calm. I would go early and cast to the banks with streamers or swimming nymphs. Enjoy this beautiful day on the lakes. Tomorrow will be different. Right now they are predicting windy conditions.
It looks like this coming weekend will be beautiful. There is almost no chance for rain Saturday or Sunday. It will be fairly warm and comfortable. Expect heavy traffic, as visitors and locals enjoy the Fall leaf colors. The nights are warmer and the water will be warmer too. I would plan to go early and fish in the lower to middle elevations. If you are able, a long hike into the backcountry is a good idea. Fishing in the mountains should be good this weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
