Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 49.6 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today, with a chance for showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could be strong to severe. An isolated tornado is possible. The high temperature will be in the low 70’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tonight. The low temperature will be around 50 degrees. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 60’s and a low tomorrow night in the middle 40’s. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and warm.
Little River is flowing at 105 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. The water temperature is 54.9 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing fairly low, but still higher than normal. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations. Trout are actively feeding on what food they can find. Nymphs and dry flies will work for you. Stealth is essential to your success, especially when the stream flows are low. Dress to blend with the forest. Fish the broken water in riffles, runs and plunge pools.
Most if not all lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing low but still higher than normal. Smallmouth bass should be fairly active. Trout, where they are stocked will be actively feeding. Nymphs and streamers will work best.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are quickly lowering the impoundments to Winter pool by generating and in some cases sluicing at the dams. Wade fishing is limited on the tailwaters. If you are boating, you have more options. Check the generation schedules on the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater. I didn’t check all schedules this morning.
This is probably not going to be a good lake fishing day. It may be breezy. Rain and possibly thunderstorms will be moving through the area later. Since some storms could be strong, with the possibility of an isolated tornado, I think I would just stay home and wait until tomorrow to go lake fishing.
This is going to be a beautiful weekend in East Tennessee. The Park will be crowded with visitors and local people enjoying the Fall colors. I would plan to go fishing early and even better, hike into the backcountry to fish. When the leaves turn brown and fall, the crowds will be gone.
The long term weather forecast still indicates no freezing temperatures through November 4th in the low elevations. Late Fall fishing may be very good.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
