Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:36 am, the temperature is 58.1 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today and cool, with a high temperature in the low 60’s, falling to the middle 40’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high near 70 and a low around 50 degrees. Sunday will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the middle to upper 70’s.
We got some rain yesterday, amounting to .43 inches in Townsend, .27 inches at Cades Cove but none in Gatlinburg. Some streams rose slightly during the day.
Little River is flowing at 109 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 78 cfs. The water temperature is 57.0 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing fairly low, but still higher than normal for this date. Water temperatures have warmed, with favorable temperatures at most elevations.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Stealth is paramount to your trout fishing success. Dress to blend with the forest and fish the broken water in plunge pools, riffles and runs.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are at low levels but higher than we normally see in late October. Smallmouth bass should be active as the water temperatures are within their preferred range. Trout, where they are stocked in these rivers will be very active. Streamers and nymphs will probably work best for all species.
I looked at several generation schedules at dams in the area. For the most part, there will be frequent and sustained flows from many dams. I saw a couple that may offer wade fishing and especially boat fishing opportunities. Check Cherokee and South Holston dam schedules to see if you can work with them. If you are boating, you will have more options.
This could be a good lake fishing day. Winds are predicted to be calm. It should be cloudy at times which is beneficial. I would still go very early when the sun is low. Cast to the banks with streamers and swimming nymphs. There is a chance game fish will be taking poppers or foam floating flies but I think you will do best using sub-surface flies.
We are busy at the shop. We are enjoying good Fall fishing weather. Anglers are responding to the good water temperatures in the free flowing rivers and streams in the mountains and downstream through the valleys. Tailwater anglers are dealing with lake drawdowns, and heavy generation below many dams so they are probably looking for alternative places to fish for now. When the lakes reach Winter pool levels, there should be less generation and more tailwater wade fishing options.
The long term weather forecast through November 5th looks good right now. It should be fairly warm during the period with no chance for freezing temperatures in the low elevations.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
