Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:05 am, the temperature is 46.9 degrees.
This is going to be a beautiful weekend, sunny both days, with a high of 70 degrees today and warmer tomorrow, in the middle 70’s. Rain will return Monday with continued warm temperatures.
Little River is flowing at 103 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.64 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 78 cfs. The water temperature is 57.2 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal with some flowing only slightly higher. Normal this time of the year is low. Water temperatures are excellent this morning at most elevations.
Fishing in the mountains is good though the streams are flowing low. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more. Trout will be hiding in the broken water in plunge pools, riffles, runs or near cover. Dry flies and nymphs will work.
Traffic will be heavy in the mountains this weekend.
Lowland rivers are flowing low, though still flowing higher than normal. Smallmouth bass will be fairly active. Trout, where they are stocked will be very active. Streamers and nymphs will probably work best for all species. You might try egg patterns when fishing for stocked trout in these rivers.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today offering a few options for tailwater anglers. You may need to go early and plan your fishing locations to avoid higher water if you are wade fishing. If you are boating, you have more options. Check the flows on the TVA website from the links below before you go. Watch for sluicing or even spilling on the pages. They are doing that at some dams.
If you plan to fly fish on a lake, go early or late when the sun is low. I would launch at daybreak and cast to the banks with streamers or swimming nymphs. The wind is predicted to be calm today.
We are hopping at the shop. Fly anglers are fishing and enjoying this beautiful Fall weather in East Tennessee. I hope you can go fishing this weekend. It is going to be a good one. We will be here for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
