Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 35.6 degrees.
It is chilly this morning, but sunshine and warmer temperatures are on todays schedule. The high temperature today will be in the low to middle 60’s, dropping to the low to middle 40’s tonight. Rain will move in tomorrow with a good chance every day through Saturday. Expect a high tomorrow in the 60’s, with highs in the 50’s Friday and Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 105 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 54.0 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are still flowing slightly higher than median flow for this date, but median flow is low. That may change later this week after the rain arrives. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations. The water is colder in the higher elevations. For instance, the temperature is 48.2 degrees at Cataloochee Creek and falling.
Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Stay hidden from the trout. Dress to blend with the forest. Nymphs will probably work best, especially early. Dry flies may produce too but I’m betting on nymphs because the water temperatures are falling.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass could be active. Trout, where they are stocked will be looking for food. Show them nymphs, streamers or egg patterns.
As expected, there will be long periods of generation at many dams today. The schedules are unusual today so you may have limited opportunities on the tailwaters if you are boating and maybe for wade fishing anglers too. Flows at Watauga Dam are predicted to be off after 7:00 am. Check the TVA website to plan your day.
I was going through this process yesterday and noticed the TVA link to Watauga Dam was missing. I don’t know what happened, or when it happened. Anyway, that link is restored now.
Lake fishing conditions are fair today. Winds will be calm. But, it will be sunny and cold this morning. I would dress warm and launch early while the sun is low. Fish the shaded banks with streamers or swimming nymphs and let them fall deep during a slow retrieve.
As we move further into Fall, and almost to November, the fly tying department is getting busy. Will and I are busy too, keeping it stocked. We sold three of our best selling Renzetti vises yesterday, the Traveler C2003-R. I have that item number memorized. We sold another earlier this week. I instructed our computer to keep seven of those in stock, so today it will order five. We stock several different Renzetti fly tying vises. You can see all of them on our online store by CLICKING HERE.
We are on a weekly ordering schedule from our largest fly tying suppliers now, and that will continue through the Winter.
I’m going to spend the day photographing new fly tying materials and tools to be added to our online store.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
