Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 49.6 degrees.
Strong winds prompted the closure of several roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park yesterday. Some roads appear to have NOT re-opened this morning. CLICK HERE to visit the Park’s Roads Twitter page for updates. If you fish in the Park, you may want to bookmark this link for future reference.
Today will be overcast with a high temperature in the middle 50’s. We have a high chance for light rain. Showers are predicted tomorrow with a high in the middle 50’s again. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 87.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.57 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 119 cfs. The water temperature is 54.1 degrees.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing low, but still at about normal for this date. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. Dress to blend with the forest. Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies may produce too.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass could be active as the water temperatures are still at the low end of their preferred range. Nymphs and streamers will work best. Water temperatures are good for trout, where they are stocked in the lowland rivers. Nymphs, streamers or egg patterns will produce for you.
Dam generation activity in the area will not offer tailwater anglers many options today. If you are boating, you have more. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can find something workable today, that I missed.
There are two positive conditions today for those who intend to fish on the lakes. It will be overcast and the wind will be calm. On the other hand, you will likely get wet. Cast to the banks with streamers or swimming nymphs and you may do well.
Leaf colors in the low elevations are beautiful right now. They are also falling off the trees. Views of the mountains are improving at our house. Paula and I are happy about that. Soon, we will enjoy looking at the mountains here at home until Spring.
Black bear are still very active. Jack drove to the shop yesterday and was caught in traffic at Hatcher’s Cut. Paula was driving to town from the opposite direction and had to stop and wait. A small bear climbed into a tree near the road. A bear jam occurred.
We have not seen many bears at our house lately but we know they are there. We have 150 pounds of sunflower hearts in the basement, waiting to fill the bird feeders when the bear become inactive. We are both looking forward to that. That is enough seed to get us and the birds through the Winter.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
