Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 51.3 degrees.
Light rain fell yesterday with totals reaching .32” in Townsend, .31” at Cades Cove, .38” in Gatlinburg and .24” at the Knoxville Airport.
It will be cloudy this morning with a slight chance for showers, then clearing this afternoon. The high temperature today will be in the low 60’s, falling to the low 40’s tonight. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the low to middle 60’s and a low in the low 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.09 feet on the gauge. The river is currently rising. Median flow for this date is 94 cfs. The water temperature is 54.0 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal and rising. I think stream levels will be good today for wading and fishing in the Smokies. But, the water is rising and it is too early to tell at what point they will peak. Right now, they look good. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the low to middle elevations.
This will be a good nymphing day. You may do well with dry flies too.
Lowland rivers are flowing higher than they were yesterday morning and above median flow for this date. They are all rising but for now, most are at good fishing levels. Smallmouth bass may be fairly active and respond to sub-surface flies. Trout, where they are stocked will be actively feeding. They are packed in the rivers and hungry. Nymphs, streamers and egg patterns will work best for you.
There are a few tailwater fishing opportunities today with breaks in some generation schedules in the state. If you are boating, you have more options. Visit the TVA website to see if you can work with the schedules on your favorite home tailwater.
This may be the best lake fishing day that we have had in a while. It will be overcast this morning. The wind is predicted to be fairly calm, out of the west and at 5 miles per hour maximum. I would still go early and cast to the banks with streamers or swimming nymphs.
We are going to feel temperatures drop to the 30’s at night later this week in the valleys with lows in the 20’s in the high elevations. If you are staying at Mount LeConte, expect snow Wednesday night through Thursday night. Newfound Gap should get a mix of rain and snow.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
