Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 43.9 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, falling to around 35 degrees tonight. Frost is possible by tomorrow morning. We have a chance for rain tomorrow with a high in the low 50’s. The chance for rain is higher tomorrow night and Thursday.
The high elevations in the Smokies are under a freeze warning tonight. The low temperature at Mounta LeConte is predicted to be in the upper 20’s. Rain mixed with snow is likely this week in the high elevations.
Little River is flowing at 176 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.93 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 123 cfs. The water temperature is 53.2 degrees and falling.
Streams in the Park are all flowing higher than normal but at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are falling this morning. At Cataloochee Creek, the current water temperature is 48 degrees and falling.
Fish the low to middle elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best today. Brown trout and brook trout are active.
Lowland rivers are flowing at good levels. Smallmouth bass fishing is probably fair. Nymphs and streamers will work best. Stocked trout in the rivers will be actively feeding. Nymphs, streamers and egg patterns will produce for you.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers plan to generate all day at most dams in the area. I did notice a break in the generation schedule at Center Hill Dam. There may be others so visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Lake anglers have two good conditions to look forward to today. It will be overcast at times. Winds will be calm. Cast to the banks with weighted streamers and swimming nymphs. A slow retrieve will probably work best.
Water temperatures are falling in the freestone streams and the trend will continue as we move further in to late Fall. We will have fair to good fishing days ahead. And, we will have slow fishing days. When water temps drop into the 40’s, trout fishing slows. Post spawn brown trout are the exception. They will be feeding when the water is cold.
We will do best fishing later in the day on sunny and warmer days, when the water is warmer. We will be fishing in the low elevations for the same reason. Anglers will be using nymphs more often. There will be hatches of blue wing olives on overcast days. We will be watching the water temperatures every day, before making the decision to go fishing.
Fishing on the tailwaters can be good during the cold months. Water discharged from the dams is warmer. We will be watching the generation schedules over the next few months.
More fly anglers will be tying files. That is already happening.
Spring fishing occurs in February in the Smokies some years. It is later in other years. Water temperatures rising to 50 degrees or warmer, triggers the Spring hatches and trout feeding activity. We will be watching for that number in the early Spring.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
