Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 37.6 degrees.
It will be sunny today and tomorrow with highs in the upper 50’s to low 60’s. The nights will be chilly, dropping into the 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 127 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 150 cfs. The water temperature is 48.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing fairly low with most being at or close to normal levels. Water temperatures are cold this morning, especially in the higher elevations.
Fishing will be best later today after the water warms. Weighted nymph rigs will likely work best. Due to the low and very clear water, stealth is essential to your success. Fish the broken water where most trout are hiding. Adult brown trout will be active and may be seen out in the open water. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Lowland rivers are flowing fairly low and clear. Smallmouth bass fishing may be slow. Fishing for stocked trout in these rivers should be good. Use nymphs, streamers or egg patterns.
There will be breaks in the generation schedules at a few dams this afternoon. You may find a tailwater fishing opportunity, especially if you are boating. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the schedule at your favorite tailwater.
This may be a nice lake fishing day. It will be sunny, which is not usually a good fishing condition. The wind is predicted to be calm. I’m not sure if fishing will be good but you could try. I think I would use weighted streamers fished deep and slow.
Much warmer air will move into the Tennessee Valley beginning Monday and linger through Friday. Fishing will improve in the free flowing streams, in the mountains and valleys, as water temperatures rise.
Most of us will change our clocks tonight and “Fall back”. This will benefit me because I go to work at the shop early, and lately, it has been dark. I hate that. It feels like I’m working on the “night shift” somewhere. I am looking forward to the change.
This is going to be a pretty weekend and an opportunity for you to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
