Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 40.6 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warm with a high temperature in the low 70s, falling to only the upper 40’s tonight. Rain showers are likely tomorrow and through the night. The high temperature will be in the middle to upper 60’s with a low in the low to middle 40’s. Much cooler temperatures will arrive for the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 103 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.64 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 157 cfs. The water temperature is 48.4 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing near normal, though Cataloochee Creek and Little River are flowing below normal. Water temperatures are cool, but we will see some warming today.
Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. It may be a good idea to go fishing later today when the water is warmer. With low and clear water conditions we have now, stealth is essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Fish the broken water in riffles, runs and plunge pools where the trout are hiding. You may see adult brown trout out in the open. Nymphs will work best today.
Lowland rivers are flowing fairly low. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow due to the cooler water temperatures. Stocked trout in these rivers will be actively feeding. Streamers, nymphs or egg patterns are good fly choices.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams today. I did find breaks in the generation schedules at Center Hill, Watauga and Chatuge dams that you may be able to work with, especially if you are boating. There may be others. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater today.
This will be a nice lake fishing day. We’ll have plenty of sunshine and calm winds. Try casting weighted streamers to the banks. Retrieve slowly and get your fly down deep. I don’t know if this will work because I don’t fish on the lakes during the colder months. But, you could try.
Shipping from our fly tying suppliers is not what I would hope for. I checked tracking on orders that should have been here already, that are stuck in odd places. I have re-ordered again from two of those companies to keep the materials and tools coming. When all of this stuff arrives, I am going to be busy and happy at the same time.
We ship our mail orders at the US Post Office next door to the shop. As far as I know, they are delivering well to our customers. I hope so.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
