Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 41.4 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy and warm with a high temperature in the upper 60’s. It will be windy today. Southeast winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected in the mountains. Rain will move into the Tennessee Valley this afternoon and remain through the night. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high near 60 degrees dropping to the upper 30’s tomorrow night. Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny and much cooler with highs in the upper 40’s to low 50’s and lows in the 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 149 cfs. The water temperature is 49.3 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. That may change by tomorrow. Wind might be your issue today. Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will be your best fly choices.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Trout, where they are stocked in these rivers should be actively feeding. Nymphs, streamers and egg patterns are your best fly choices.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams, almost all day. Check the TVA website and you may find a schedule you can work with. I did not check every one, just the schedules for the most popular tailwaters nearby.
Due to the predicted gusty winds, this is probably not a good lake fishing day.
Today we honor and thank the veterans who served in our military. This federal holiday was first called Armistice Day dating back to 1919. To all of you veterans, “Thank you for your service”.
I have very fond memories of the people I served with in the Army. Though that was during the Viet Nam War era, long ago, I am still friends with a couple of those people today. Serving in the military is something you never forget. I remember very well, basic combat training at Fort Polk Louisiana. We were a bunch of kids who became men.
I found a well written and very informative article on the Fly Fisherman website on the subject of “Midges”. It was first published in the magazine in 1985 and it was written and illustrated by Dave Whitlock. This is an excellent article and you can read it by CLICKING HERE. This article is titled “Midging Part 2”. There is a link to “Midging Part 1” on the page.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
