Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 44.8 degrees.
It will be cloudy this morning with a slight chance for rain. The sky will clear later but today’s high temperature will only be in the middle to upper 40’s, dropping to the high 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 50’s.
There is a chance for snow in the high elevations this morning. The high temperature today is predicted to be 35 degrees at Newfound Gap.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 143 cfs. The water temperature is 50.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal, with some flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are cold in the high elevations and probably will not warm much if at all today. Fish the lower elevation streams where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you.
Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow in the lowland rivers. Trout, where they are stocked should be actively feeding today. Streamers, nymphs and egg patterns should work fine.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at some dams all day, but offer breaks in the schedules this afternoon at others. Check Center Hill, South Holston and Watauga dams to see if you can work with those generation schedules. You will have more options if you are boating.
It will be overcast early today, which is a good lake fishing condition. Winds will be calm. I would cast to the banks with heavily weighted streamers, retrieved slow and deep.
A group of wild turkeys that roost behind our house flew to the ground early yesterday morning just when I drove down our private road. I saw them coming and stopped. Those turkeys hit the ground all around my truck, some on the left and others on my right. Thankfully, none of them hit my truck.
When wild turkeys fly from the roost, and land on the ground, they are anything but graceful. When they land you can hear the “thump”. You would think they are injured, but they always get up and walk away. When I came home from work yesterday, they were back in the area where they landed earlier, probably thinking about roosting again last night.
This time of the year I see wild turkeys almost every day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
