Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 39.2 degrees.
It will by sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s, falling to the upper 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be warmer, with high reaching the middle 60’s and a low in the middle to upper 40’s. Wednesday will be sunny and warm, with a high in the low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 96.0 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 144 cfs. The water temperature is 46.2 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal. Water temperatures are chilly, especially in the high elevations. Fish in the low elevation streams where the water is warm. Fishing will be better later today.
If you plan to fish on Little River, expect low and clear water conditions. Stealth is essential to your success. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. You may spot brown trout out in the open water. Weighted nymphs are good fly choices.
Lowland rivers are flowing at about normal with the exception of Little River which is flowing fairly low. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow due to the cool water temperatures. Fishing for trout, where they are stocked will be fair and may improve later today. Use nymphs, steamers, egg patterns and squirmy worms.
Tailwater fishing options are limited today. There are breaks in the generation schedules at South Holston and Watauga dams. In fact, the generators are scheduled to be off at Watauga Dam most of the day. Check the TVA website before you go or to see if there are angler friendly flows at other dams and to verify the predicted flows at Watauga and South Holston. If you live in Middle Tennessee, look at the schedule at Center Hill Dam. If you are boating, you will have more choices on some tailwaters.
When I arrived at the shop yesterday morning, two wild turkeys were crossing the street in front of the Post Office next door. It is highly unusual to see turkeys in town. About two weeks ago, two turkeys were at the front door at the shop. These are probably the same birds and they are likely fed by people.
Traffic was light in Townsend yesterday. Leaf season is over. We will not see many visitors until Thanksgiving week. This is a good time to visit the Smokies. You will see less people. There are no closed roads due to snow or ice today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
