Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 25.2 degrees.
It will be sunny today and fairly warm with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, dropping to the middle to upper 30’s tonight. There is a chance for showers tomorrow afternoon but otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy with a high around 60 degrees.
Little River is flowing low at 83.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 172 cfs. The water temperature is 45.3 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing lower than median flow for this date. The streams are cold. We may see water temperatures rise some later today. Due to the low water flows, cold water temperatures and very clear water, fishing will probably be slow today. You best plan, should you decide to go, would be to wait until later and fish the low elevations where the water is warmer. I would plan on using weighted nymph rigs.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow. Stocked trout may be active later today in the low elevations. Use streamers, nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today, especially this afternoon. You may be able to work with the flows predicted on some tailwaters if you are boating. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
What we have are certainly less than ideal fishing conditions. Not many people are fishing and we are slow at the shop. That may change this weekend as more people will be arriving in town for the Thanksgiving holiday.
I will be busy this weekend, receiving and ordering fly tying materials and tools. This is fly tying season. The fly tying department is stocked better than it has been for a while. Some items that have been out of stock from our suppliers for months, are now suddenly available. We have what I hope is a big shipment from Whiting Farms in route to the shop. We won’t know what we get until it arrives. This order was placed several weeks ago. The folks at Whiting do a great job. But, it takes a year to grow a chicken.
I place computer generated orders to the fly tying suppliers every Sunday. Most of them arrive by the next weekend. Then, the cycle starts over.
