Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 27.1 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the upper 50’s falling to the low 40’s tonight. Rain is likely tonight, totaling between a half and three quarters of an inch. We have a slight chance for rain tomorrow morning, before clearing later, with a high in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 83.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 169 cfs. The water temperature is 43.9 degrees and falling.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are cold and plunging.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, go later, waiting for the streams to warm some. Fish the lowest elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best for you.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow early today but they could be catchable later if when the water warms. I would not count on that happening. Fishing for stocked trout may be good. Use streamers, nymphs, egg patterns or Squirmy Worms.
The streams are flowing low, cold and clear. If we do get the rain that is predicted tonight, water levels will improve in the free flowing streams this week. Water temperatures will be on the cold side through the week. Conditions will be excellent for tying flies.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams today. Wade fishing will be possible below some dams but you may need to drive further to fish, depending on where you live. If you are boating, you will have more tailwater fishing opportunities. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
