Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 49.1 degrees.
It will be cloudy early today before clearing later with a high temperature near 50 degrees, dropping to the low 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle to upper 40’s and a low in the upper 20’s.
Rain fell early yesterday evening and overnight. Rainfall amounts at various locations were:
.46 inches at the Knoxville Airport
.87 inches in Townsend
.50 inches at Cades Cove
.54 inches in Gatlinburg
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 202 cfs. The river is rising quickly. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees and rising.
Most streams in the Smokies are rising, though Oconaluftee River just peaked and is receding at below median flow. I don’t thing high water will be an issue today, but it is too early to know for sure. Some streams could be temporarily stained. Water temperatures are warming this morning at all streams that have remote sensors.
Fish the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you.
Some lowland rivers may be temporarily stained and the water is rising in most. Water temperatures are rising, at least for now. Smallmouth bass may be somewhat active. Try streamers or nymphs. Trout, where they are stocked should be active. Use streamers, nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms.
Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today. There are breaks in the generation schedules at several dams later. You may be able to work with some, especially if you are boating.
Visitors are arriving in Townsend for the Thanksgiving holiday. We should be busy at the shop this week. We will be closed Thursday and I won’t be getting up at 4:30 am to write a fishing report. I’m looking forward to that.
Customers will be buying gifts for their fly fishing family and friends from now through late December. Many gift cards will be purchased in the shop, over the phone and online. This is the beginning of gift card season at LRO.
I don’t see a chance for snow in the long term forecast through December 6th. Unless the weather pattern changes, it will be too warm in the valley. It may snow in the mountains. I love seeing snow in the mountains, with only wet roads down here.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
